Life of George Washington


February 22, 1732 - George Washington born Augustine Washington and Mary Bell Washington, in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

1749 - Washington appointed as surveyor of Culpeper County.

1753 - Governor Dinwiddie sends Washington to appraise French activity in the Ohio Country.

1754 - Washington's party kills Jumonville, beginning the French and Indian War.

1755 - Washington distinguishes himself following Braddock's defeat on the Monongahela. He becomes commander in chief of all Virginian forces, with a promotion to colonel.

1758 - Washington serves with Forbes in the taking of Fort Duquesne. Retires from military service.

January 6, 1759 - Washington marries the widow Martha Dandridge Custis.

1775 - Washington appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

1776 - Continental Army captures Trenton and Princeton, New Jersey.

1781 - Cornwallis surrenders to American forces at Yorktown.

1789 through1797 - Washington serves as first President of the United States.

December 14, 1799 - George Washington dies at home.
